Ian Buckle from BPR Medical was on hand to talk to cluster headache patients and carers at the OUCH (Organisation for the Understanding of Cluster Headache) North East & Cumbria Conference - on Sunday March 18.

Around 90 people attended the event from as far afield as Dublin and Edinburgh. As well as demonstrating the Ultraflow™ oxygen demand valve, Ian listened to patients’ concerns about accessing the product through the Home Oxygen Service. While patients were full of praise for their home oxygen delivery technicians, many expressed concern about being unable to obtain the demand valve in their area or not being provided with the appropriate equipment.

Research studies have suggested that high flow oxygen can be effective in alleviating the symptoms of cluster headache. Work is still underway to support this with further evidence, including an assessment of cluster headache patients in South Tyneside to determine whether oxygen can speed up the arrest of a cluster headache attack.

The day, despite the mini ‘Beast from the East’, was very well attended and considered a complete success by the organisers and patients alike. There were talks from eminent clinicians in the field of headaches and some great advice from both patients and clinical nurse specialists. A really worthwhile event.
